Hello, this is Álvaro, born and raised in San Sebastian, guide and owner for Around Tours San Sebastian.
I could tell you many things about my virtues, my weakest points… etcétera. But I´m just gonna tell you a story:
It was the summer of 2016 and I had just finished my third year of Bussiness Administration. That`s when this whole project of Around Tours started. It was always clear for me that I wanted to be my own boss, and that summer, I could realize that something was changing in my town:
There were more English speaking people than ever, and I could see that most of them entered the pintxo bars intimidated by the language barrier, and not really knowing what to order…
That´s when I saw this bussinnes oportunity: “These people need help!” I thought. And help from a real insider. I wanted to help them and make the most of their pintxo experience in San Sebastian´s Old Town.
And that´s how I decided to design my very first tour: the San Sebastian Private Pintxos Tour.
The first clients that booked were two Australian girls...
I lost money on that very first tour.
My price was too cheap and once the experience started, I wanted to go all out.
Bueno.
Since then, I have developed different private tours, all of them having these two concepts in mind:
1. Considering what I truly think is worth doing while visiting San Sebastian and the Basque Country: must-see places, authentic experiences and connecting you with local artisans and creators.
2. At the same time, always listening to the market. Always listening to YOU and what your interests are.
That´s why I prefer to call myself a host rather than a guide.
I don´t like to be like a radio throwing data.
Of course, I need to know that this church or that monument was built in the 15th century in gothic style etc etc etc. But my work goes beyond that:
I like to CONNECT with you. I love when the tour becomes a conversation that flows, connected to what you real needs and interests are:
- Maybe you are jetlagged.
- Maybe you need a coffee.
- Maybe you are more interested in politics than in arts.
- Or maybe you are more interested in food than politics.
- Or maybe you want to know what the real state price are here..
I try to adapt to your needs. That´s why I like to call myself a host rather than a guide.
