Basque Coast: SJ Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka and Lekeitio
From the east to west: Traveling through the Basque Coast line from San Sebastian to Bilbao you will encounter many villages, astonishing views, old Basque architectural homes, and exquisite restaurants leaving you no option but to lick your fingers.
In this tour we visit: SJ Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka and Lekeitio.
What will we visit?
SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE
The three phrases most difficult to say outloud are: 1. I need help. 2. I was wrong. And 3. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. San Juan de Gazteluqué? De Gaztelugatxe. ¿De Gazteluqué? De Gaz – te – lu – ga – txe. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The whole name doesn’t even entirely fit in the heading of this tour. We can practice when we meet in person, don’t worry.
About San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: It’s one of the most photographed places in all of the Basque country. When you see it with your own eyes, you will understand why. Along with the Flysch of Zumaia, it was used as a scene setting in Game of Thrones. At the peak of the peninsula sits Ermita de San Juan Bautista, a chapel constructed by Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century. To arrive at the chapel, 241 steps are to be mounted. Not everything on this tour will be about eating and drinking right? Nope!
MUNDAKA: THE BEST WAVE IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY
In all of the Basque Country and in Europe. HA! What about those certain individuals who state “Oh yes, I surf, have surfed! Let them go to Mundaka, let them have a test run, the Basque surfing test.
IMPORTANT: We do not do surf tours. Unfortunately, we are not experienced enough to take our guests surfing.
And if surfing is not of particular interest to you, that is alright. Mundaka sits in a protected national park, surrounded by little villages and held in the mouth of the Urdaibai River, a protected biotope. Around Mundaka we will find fishing ports, Laga Playa, The Lookout of Ogoño, and much more.
The best part is that Mundaka is not a well known tourist attraction, few people know of its importance and relevance to the Basque people.
LEKEITIO, THE HIDDEN JEWEL
You didn’t think that the only beautiful bay of the Basque Country was San Sebastian’s very own “La Concha ” did you? Have a look at Lekeitio.
Whether you are for the monarchy or just a republican, you’ll have to agree that royalty never did such a bad job when taking the time to select their vacationing residences. The last Hungarian empress, Zita de Borbón-Parma selected Lekeitio as her destination.
Have you neither the money nor the time to buy yourself the Uribarren Palace (The Last Austrian Empress’ Palace) and vacation there all summer long? Or perhaps you do. If that is the case, bless you!
The most beautiful part of Lekeitio can be visited in an hour and you don’t have to book yourself a room in the palace. An hour in Lekeitio and a beer on tap in the lighthouse, some of the best views in the Basque Country.
