In the Heart of the Basque Country: Mountains and Architecture

Discover the heart of the Basque country. It’s most intimate and rural areas: farmland, barns, old farm homes, Basílica de San Ignacio de Loiola, sheep, vultures and hawks (with luck you may see some, hold on tight to your lunch!) Find yourself in the Sierra de Aizkorri… The Sanctuary of Aránzazu, an ode to modernity.

PS: you don’t have to be catholic to come on this tour. If you are Christian, Jewish, Atheist, or Muslim, the religious architecture present on this tour moves you as much as the mountains surrounding the villages.

SAN IGNACIO DE LOYOLA: THE WARRIOR SAINT

San Ignacio de Loyola (1491-1521) was a piece of work. Diego Laínez, his most loyal and just successor, noted: “Ignacio de Loyola fought to be redeemed until he forced himself take a vow of chastity.”

That piece of inflection was received on May 20th of 1521. Ignacio de Loyola was defeated when wounded at the French Invasion of Pamplona. After 8 months of recovery and various operations without anesthesia, everything changed: from warrior to a barefoot pilgrim. Learn the whole story on this tour with us! (It’s too long to write it all down.)

Constructed in his honor in his hometown, Azpeitia, was the Basilica of the Sanctuary of Loyola. The Basilica is without a doubt the most notable baroque construction in the entire Basque Country. Designed by Italian architect, Carlo Fontana (Bernini’s Disciple), this 17th century jewel will transport you to The Vatican walls without even having to leave the Basque Country.

VIRGIN LANDSCAPES, FARM HOMES AND MOUNTAINS

“Incredible that this rural and authentic landscape is only a few kilometers south of San Sebastian.” The road that leads us to our destination is a visual pleasure, intertwining between the forest walls, mountains and old farm homes. All this just to arrive and have a little aperitivo. A Pintxo and a drink next to the La Antigua Ermita (an antique hermit), a cathedral built by Basque hermits. Built in the 12th century, it is presumed to be the most authentic ceilings constructed, made of wood and in the shape of a boat bilge.

ARÁNZAZU : THE MOST MODERN… AND THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL

If you believe in God, this will reassure you. If you do not believe in God, you’ll have to reconsider. Look carefully how the light streams in, it’s all very well thought out. The inside of the Sanctuary of Arantzazu is going to become your favorite place.

The Location where it is found is in the center of The Sierra de Aizkorri, approximately 1000 meters high and surrounded by mountains and mysterious nature. The building, provocative as they call it. It possesses an exceptional architectural quality, its modernity defied the most conservative sector of the Spanish church in the late 1950s: a historical dispute arose, people either loved or hated it. This story is worth the visit.
